The best things in life aren’t things

What an amazing year 2018 was at the Keystone-Monon Community Garden at Arsenal Park! We want to thank all in our community who made it such a success: our gardeners, our generous sponsors, and our community supporters. We are so grateful for you!

What was new in 2018?

  • In August, our second Neighborhood Garden Tour raised over $430 for the garden. Close to 20 participants visited six gardens, and we welcomed the support of 13 local business sponsors!
  • We hosted a weekly by-donation yoga series, Yoga in the Garden, all summer. Huge thanks to instructor John-Payton Rowley, SoBeFit. We welcomed almost 300 yogis-in-training of all ages and raised nearly $1,000 in donations for our instructor and the garden.
  • We built a new welcome and communications area: a planting table, outdoor message board, and arbor to create more growing space and shade. Huge thanks to our construction guru Liz Laughlin, owner of Limelight Coffee, and the Marion County Master Gardeners Association, whose generous grant helped support these exciting infrastructure additions.
  • We partnered with the IBG Youth Outreach Program during its pilot summer, hosting a weekly gardening and nutrition class for youth from our neighborhood.
  • We hosted a seed giveaway, cover crop workshop, essential oils workshop, and seedling sale, open to all in our community, raising over $560.
  • We hosted two big work days and expanded our perennial wildflower plantings. The monarch butterfly caterpillars found us this summer! Not only do flowers add beauty, but they greatly increase the biodiversity of pollinators in Arsenal Park.
  • We partnered with so many in our community! We would be nothing without our community partners and supporters. Please support them year-round and during this holiday season. And the biggest thanks go to Indy Parks and Recreation for their continued support of the garden.
  • We gardened – and our gardeners’ beds were simply gorgeous this year! 20 gardeners grew fresh, organic produce all summer long.

What do we have planned for 2019?

  • Updated garden signage to tell our story and help community members connect with the garden and each other when they visit.
  • Website updates, including a recipe corner, virtual garden tour, gardener biographies, and other activities.
  • Expanded efforts to make a deeper impact in our neighborhood. And more yoga!

Check out Katie’s place, one of our featured gardens AND help us say thanks to one of our generous sponsors, Tiny House Treats!

From Katie: I really want our home to help serve as an educational stop and opportunity to talk about invasive plants such as bindweed and honeysuckle. Over the past 3 years, we’ve pretty much torn out our entire garden space, laid soil, laid cardboard and more soil, mulched everything, and hoped for the best. Bindweed killed our entire pollinators garden and majority of the rest of our gardens, so last year we started from scratch.

My garden is definitely not the prettiest, by miles (and anyone who knows my plot at he community garden knows this, too!), but I always have a nice harvest. This year we moved our entire fruit and veggie garden because of bindweed. Though we are still fighting some of it off, we have had lots of success. This year we’ve grown strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, black raspberries, tomatoes, tomatillos, sweet and spicy peppers, cucumbers, corn, a ton of herbs, and peaches! We also have restarted our native pollinators garden and have a very delicate fairy garden in the back. We are also attempting to add in a rain garden and an herb garden specifically for our chickens. With all of our gardens and chickens, it’s never a dull moment!

I’ll also have watermelon on hand from the community garden and hopefully some salsa for tasting.

Today, we also recognize garden tour sponsor, TINY HOUSE TREATS. Thank you for your support!

Today, we want to thank two of our Garden Tour sponsors, Black Circle Brewing Co. and Next Door Eatery! Our community garden is entirely volunteer- and donation/fundraising-driven. We would not exist without the support of amazing folks in our neighborhood – like these two businesses! Be sure to visit and thank them in person. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

BLACK CIRCLE BREWING CO.

Black Circle Brewing Company is equal parts micro-brewery, craft beer bar and music venue. We are located in the Double 8 warehouse, now called Refinery 46, in the Midtown / SoBro fringe. We share the building with several local businesses and a co-op working space on the lower level. Our focus is on quality local craft offerings and brewing our own versions of our favorite beer styles. We have a unique relationship with Elena Ruz Cuban Cuisine, which offers our guests a full menu in the tap room and allows us to focus on the beer. We will regularly host live music events, movie screenings and other local artists and entertainers. We also have an ever expanding collection of vintage arcade games, so bring a handful of quarters with you.

NEXT DOOR EATERY

Next Door is an American eatery serving real food sourced from American farmers. Next Door is pioneering Urban Casual—a new approach to dining out that is faster, more fun and affordable to the average American. Next Door is a gathering place for everyone including families, friends, and co-workers. The menu features a variety of shared plates (our Kale Chips are famous), fresh salads, sandwiches, burgers (don’t miss the Beet Burger!) and bowls. Next Door offers kegged wine, beer and cocktails. By kegging our wine, Next Door will save over 35,000 wine bottles from being recycled (or thrown away). Cheers to that!

As the countdown begins – less than one month away! – we will be celebrating our wonderful sponsors AND giving you a sneak preview of the gardens we’ll be visiting.

From Cher, resident at our first highlighted garden stop:

Our garden is located in our front yard. This is the fourth summer we’ve had it. We grow most everything and have a wildflower patch at the top. It’s our favorite place to hang out during the summer. For us, gardening is about harmonizing with nature and letting our children see how we work in concert with all aspects of life. Having our garden in the front yard allows us to connect with our neighbors, as we live on a street that sees a lot of foot traffic. We keep a basket just outside our gate, to share our harvest with our neighbors.

Today, we also recognize our tour program sponsor, Hope Plumbing. THANK YOU for your support!

HOPE PLUMBING, Garden Tour Program Sponsor

Our friends at Hope Plumbing have made their new home right up the street from the garden and have also helped us out tremendously by installing and fixing our garden’s water source!
